The Tovy Meshoulam Trombone Quartet was founded in 1992. Tovy Meshoulam – composer, arranger, conductor and music instructor – formed the ensemble based on the belief that high musical standards can be achieved through constant dedication and hard work. Performing chamber music, which requires extreme sensitivity and care, needs rigorous training and regular rehearsals, as this ensemble practices. Apart from Tovy, the members of the quartet were all his former students. The musicians’ common background as Tovy’s students and having all played under his guidance in a trombone choir and big band has helped the quartet develop a common musical concept and taste. During the years of its existence, this ensemble has held numerous concerts around Israel, and has enjoyed much praise and appreciation from its audiences. Various musical institutions have also acknowledged the quartet’s achievements, and it has received scholarships both from the America-Israel cultural fund and from the Israeli Union of Brass Band Conductors (EITAN). In concerts, the quartet’s goal has always been to encourage young Trombone players, to promote the image of the instrument and to bring audiences closer to chamber music. The group’s repertoire covers a wide variety of musical style from different periods, ranging from classical to contemporary music, from Jazz compositions to artistic arrangements of songs, and featuring many compositions written originally for trombone quartets, including some written or arranged by Tovy Meshoulam especially for this group. The quartet has recorded two albums: Slide by Slide (1998) and The
Seventh Dimension (2000). Both albums focus on Jazz and modern music
and feature original compositions and arrangements. The albums have
won many praises from music professionals and have had been aired on
the radio on several occasions. Rather than focusing on the trombone
quartet as an ensemble, these albums center on the music and musical
statement. |
